Welcome to Leslie’s Studio 2 adventure!

For these next ten weeks, I will be modeling the realistic muscular structure of a camel. I was inspired by Nicholas Morel’s Grizzly Anatomy Model: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/3o6lyE

I will be utilizing this model of a camel skeleton as a base for my work. Model by “3D Horse”: https://www.renderhub.com/3d-horse/arabian-camel-skeleton-dromedary

I plan to model the realistic muscle structure in Zbrush, making sure the attachments of the muscles to the skeleton are accurate. Once modeled, the muscles will be retopologized for rigging. I am partnering with Sam Welsh to rig the camel, and Rachael Ormond who will animate a walk cycle of the camel. While Sam and Rachael are working, I will move forward with texturing and will hopefully be able to put everyone’s work together at the end with a render out of Marmoset.

Skeleton Model Edits

I made a lot of subtle edits with the skeleton to correct some anatomy/flow issues.

- Lots of edits to the skull and teeth

- Added more curve to the top of the scapula

- Pulled the ribs in more

- Added some subtle curves to some of the leg bones to help with the flow

- Made the phalange bones slightly smaller

I’ve begun adding muscles. I’ve been using a medical app that has a model of a dog with a 3D view of the skeletal system, muscle system, digestive system, etc. With the dog as a reference, I’m doing my best to make the right decisions as to where the muscles connect to the bones in which spots. And of course, the muscles of a dog don’t correlate exactly with the muscles of a camel. In other words, my work thus far is a lot of educated guess-work.

I finished all the muscles in the back legs. There are a few muscles on the inside of the leg that I’m concerned about in terms of placement. Particularly the way the vastus lateralis connects to the inner leg, leaving the silhouette of the tensor fasciae latae looking odd. I think I’ll continue on with the abdomen muscles and revisit those inner leg muscles later on.

April 5th - Class 5

The torso is essentially complete. There are a few spots I’ll likely want to revisit, but overall I’m satisfied with how the torso shapes look. I also Zremeshed the skeleton so that it is at a more manageable poly count for rigging. The skeleton and the leg muscles are ready for Sam to experiment with.

Small update for today. I adjusted some muscles to fill in some gaps. I also tweaked and added to the neck muscles and pec muscles.

April12th.png

April 12th

The front legs are finished. It’s now onto the facial muscles and then tricky-est part.. the neck muscles.

April14th.png

April 14th

The major facial muscles are finished. I also filled a gap in the inside of the back legs. (I realized I forgot the semimembranosus)

April 19th

All muscles are finished and will be retopologized ASAP!

April 21st - Midterm

I have part of the back leg retopologized. I’m hoping I can hand Sam the entire back leg retopologized and UV’d by this coming Friday. We discussed that I could give her retopologized/UV’d muscles in chunks as I complete them.

April 28th

I gave Sam the leg muscles over the weekend. I’m onto working on the retopo/UV of the abdomen muscles. I’m going to meet with Sam later today to get a better idea of how fast she is working and I’ll hopefully have an estimate of when to expect all the muscles retopologized and UV’d for next class.

May 3rd

The abdomen muscles and the upper chest muscles are finished and have been sent to Sam.

May 5th

I was only able to get a few of the front leg muscles done for this class. Being basically bed-ridden on Monday from 2nd COVID shot side effects put me behind for the week. I have a very busy weekend ahead of me, wish me luck!

May 10th - Class 15

Front leg muscles are finished and have been sent to Sam. Rachael (the animator) ran into issues with the rig and they’re being discussed with Sam. The video for class 15 is a rough layout of how this project will appear on my demo reel.

May 17th

All muscles have been retopologized wooo!! They’ve all been sent to Sam, and now I’ll be working on textures.

May 19th

I’m nearly finished with the textures of the fantasy house ( a project from Studio 1 that I didn’t quite finish). I should have both textures of the house and the camel done over the weekend, and that will leave me with the coming week to get them rendered in Marmoset.

May 24th

I’ve rendered the fantasy house and I have the textures for the camel finished. Once I have Rachael’s final animation I can render it in Marmoset.
